MEND Freelance Trainer – One Day Trainer

BACKGROUND

MEND is a childhood obesity organisation that provides evidence-based, family-oriented programmes to prevent and treat child obesity as well as training to frontline staff to build local capacity and skills. MEND’s mission is to enable a significant, measurable and sustained reduction in global childhood and family overweight and obesity.

MEND has been delivering “Raising child obesity awareness” training since 2006 and has run over a hundred courses. In addition MEND has developed a new training “Talking to Families About Weight” in response to high demand created by the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP).

MEND is looking for freelance trainers to deliver both trainings nationally. Successful candidates will receive training and resources to deliver both one-day training courses. This post is envisaged to be exciting for those with a strong background in training and extensive experience in childhood obesity and its management.

JOB SUMMARY                   

The MEND One-Day Trainer is an individual with experience of training a wide range of health, education and fitness professionals and managing childhood obesity using diet and nutrition, behaviour change and physical activity recommendations.

Main Purpose of the job:

The trainer will have a positive attitude toward the management of childhood obesity and be aware of the the nature of weight bias in the management of overweight individuals. You will be responsible for delivering both one-day training programmes to frontline staff in order to raise awareness of childhood obesity and its general management.

RESPONSIBILITIES and PERSONAL DUTIES

- To deliver a series of one-day MEND training courses, using a training pack that has already been developed

- The trainer will effectively engage health, education and fitness professionals in a positive manner

- Logistics

- Obtain required information from local organiser about logistics

- Liaise with local organiser about attendance and suggest ways to maximise attendance

- During the training the trainer will:

-       provide an overview of child obesity, causes and solutions

-       provide training on specific aspects of evidence based management of childhood obesity including:

o        assessment

o        management via the children and young people care pathway

o        essentials of behavioural management of child obesity

o        advice on physical activity

o        advice on nutrition

o        advice on multi-agency working

- engage the trainees with practical, effective evidence based examples from the MEND Programme

- communicate information on local child obesity services, with support from the local team

- provide advice on establishing locally tailored services

- provide advice on obtaining funding for services and on sustainability

- enable discussions on raising the issue of weight

-  facilitate group discussions as well as pairs, role plays etc. 

•    Attend bi-annual MEND Best Practice Conference in order to keep abreast with MEND issues, and to meet other MEND One Day Trainers (travel and accommodation expenses provided as required)

o        NB. The next MEND Best Practice Conference is scheduled for Friday 1st May in London

•         To ensure that the training programme is evaluated using the MEND evaluation process

•         To provide feedback to the MEND Central Programme Development and Training Team

•         To ensure the safe-keeping of all equipment for MEND’s one day training courses

•         Comply with all reasonable standards of safety and comply with the Company's health and safety procedures from time to time in force at the premises where the Services are provided and report to MEND any unsafe working conditions or practices.

Other

The number of training programmes that MEND delivers varies on a month by month basis, however the dates can be arranged to suit the trainer.

It is essential that the trainer can travel as he /she may be required to deliver training in any part of the UK. However, MEND will endeavour to engage trainers locally when they are available.

Remuneration

Pay is competitive and dependant upon experience.

The ODT and the Talking About Weight (TAW) trainings require slightly different skills sets. Additional skills that are essential or desirable for the Talking About Weight training are indicated by the presence of the abbreviation (TAW). All other skills are applicable to both ODT and TAW trainings.

Education and Qualifications

  • Degree in the following areas: nutrition (MSc), dietetics, psychology, sports science or combinations of above.

 

Specialised training in behaviour change such as those run by Behaviour Change Training, an accredited  course in Cognitive or  Behavioural Therapy (CBT or BT), or a qualification in coaching or counselling. (TAW)

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Ability to facilitate group discussions on sensitive subjects (TAW)

 

 

Experience

  • At least 3 years work experience in the field of obesity or a related field such as eating disorders, or diabetes.
  • Child weight management experience
  • Experience and/or training in the use of  behavioural management techniques
  • Experience working with groups particularly children and parents.
  • Experience training groups of adults

Knowledge

•           Weight management knowledge

•           Knowledge of nutrition, behaviour change and physical activity.

•           Ability to plot and interpret information on an adult and child BMI growth chart (TAW)

•           Understanding of weight bias and weight-related stigma (TAW)

•           Knowledge of The MEND and Mini-MEND  Programmes
