Cheese Industry Showing no Signs of Salt Reduction NEW Study Shows

Action on Salt  examined the salt content of over 600 Cheddar and similar cheeses using 10 retailers.   

According to the new research data by Action on Salt,  plant-based cheeses contain the highest level of salt with an average salt content of 1.91g/100g.

Cheddar cheese contained the second highest salt levels, Cheddar was found to have an average salt content of 1.78g/100g. A small 30g 'matchbox' portion of Cheddar cheese contained more salt than a packet of crisps i.e. a portion of Cheddar contained 0.5g salt.

Transforming our food environment: a spotlight on promotions

Public Health Scotland and Food Standards Scotland have produced a briefing paper on transforming our food environment and focuses on food promotions.

The briefing paper highlights the promotion of foods high in fat, sugar or salt, and explores the effect of food promotions on our behaviours and health. The briefing paper also recommends for more progressive action to reduce the promotion of foods high in fat, sugar or salt.

The demise of oat milk

The sales of oat milk are declining in the UK and the US, although Oatly had a 0.3 per cent growth in volume in the UK last year.

This is a big change compared to a few years ago; between 2019 and 2020 the sales of oat milk increased by over 100 per cent. The consumption of  dairy seems to be increasing. Adults aged between 18 to 35 years old in Europe are  consuming more dairy compared to recent years, with 81 percent consuming cow’s milk at least once per week [1].

Worrying health consequences of the great British fibre gap

A new report “Going against the grain” [1] has been published based on a consumer survey on dietary fibre of over 1000 British adults aged 18 to 75 plus years old.

The report was carried out on behalf of General Mills, the maker of FibreOne. The majority of people (74%) surveyed claimed to know what dietary fibre is. However, only a third (36%) picked out the correct definition of dietary fibre from a list, i.e. ‘a type of carbohydrate that humans can't digest’.

Egg Before Chicken in Protein Poll by Dairy Farm

A YouGov Survey commissioned by Graham's Family Dairy, supported by the University of Loughborough found that:

  • Only 30% of adults in the UK who exercise know how much protein is contained in a medium sized egg
  • Only 9% of adults in the UK who exercise know how much protein is contained in a medium sized chicken breast
  • Only 18% of adults in the UK who exercise are aware of how much protein is in a standard sized yoghurt
